IS-1489(1991) covers the specifications of PORTLAND POZZOLANA CEMENT.

PORTLAND POZZOLANA CEMENT (PPC) is manufactured by the inter-grinding of ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT clinker with 10 to 25% of pozzolanic material (as per latest amendment, it is 15 to 35%). A pozzolanic material is an aluminous or siliceous material which itself does not have any cementing property. Pozzolanic material reacts with calcium hydroxide in presence of water and forms a material having cementing properties.

Rapid hardening cement is similar to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). As the name suggests this cement gains strength more rapidly as compared to Ordinary Portland Cement. Rapid hardening cement which develops higher rate of development of strength should not be confused with quick-setting cement which only sets quickly.

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is by far the most important type of cement. Prior to 1987, there was only one grade of cement which was governed by IS 269(1976). After 1987 higher grades of cement were introduced in India. Ordinary Portland Cement was classified in 3 grades:
  1. OPC GRADE 33
  2. OPC GRADE 43
  3. OPC GRADE 53

Cement was classified depending upon the strength of the cement at 28 days when tested as per IS 4031(1988). For example if the strength of cement cube of dimension (15cmx15cmx15cm.) is not less than 33N/mm2 then it is classified as Ordinary Portland Cement Grade 33.
